Environice was established in year 2000 by Stefan Gislason (M.Sc. in Environmental Management and Policy). The company is located in Borgarnes, a small town of around 2,000 inhabitants, only an hour drive from Reykjavik.

Environice provides its clients with sustainability consulting, focusing not only on conventional environmental issues, but also on social and economic issues and the interrelations between these three dimensions.

National authorities and local governments have from the very beginning been the main target group for the consulting services of Environice, together with large companies and SME’s, especially within the tourism sector. The largest single task so far has been the co-ordination of the Local Agenda 21 work in Iceland, financed by the National Association of Local Authorities and The Ministry for the Environment. Through this the office of Environice has become a knowledge centre for sustainable development in Iceland.

Environice has been working a lot for The Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM), which is a co-operation platform for the governments of the Nordic countries. The role of Environice in this sense has mainly been co-ordination of the work of a couple of the council’s permanent working groups in the field of waste management and integrated product policy (IPP). In addition to that Environice has been carrying out individual projects for the Copenhagen office of NCM, including an evaluation of the implementation of the Nordic Strategy for Sustainable Development, co-ordinating policy making for the Nordic eco-label The Nordic Swan, etc.

In its work for individual companies and local governments, Environice has mainly been focusing on issues like Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), review of new operating licenses according to the IPPC-directive, preparing for environmental certification within the tourism industry etc.

Education for sustainable development has been moving up the agenda of Environice during the latest years. The employees of Environice have among other tasks developed course material for companies, industry associations and education centers. Environice has also been contracted by The Agricultural University of Iceland (AUI) to take care of a couple of courses at the university, such as on nature conservation and sustainable development.

Environice offers tailor-made solutions, as each client has specific needs. The solution cannot be sold directly from the shelf and framed on the client’s wall. On the contrary it has to be designed in cooperation with the client. We might not know the answer, but we know a lot of questions.

Environice is a small consultancy with 2-5 employees. The company is not only based on high academic competence in the field of biology, geography, environmental science and environmental management, but also on decades of work experience, especially in the municipal sector. The core idea is the same as Einstein’s, i.e. that problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them. Thus, problem solving needs an innovative way of thinking, where focus cannot be put on technical solutions only, but has to take cognitive issues into account at the same time. The whole thing is about sustainable development, a holistic view, cooperation, coordination and facilitation. That’s where Environice is at its best.
